Last Chance to confirm they are ready :)
This is Uswim Dover Souls Team Foxtrot who are taking on The English Channel Relay in August this year. Originally a Team of 3 Jo Roe, Stuart Reid and Justin Roberts have been training hard for over 16 months and have taken on their milestone swims in preparation. This being their biggest raising money for Level Water which provides swimming lessons for Children with Disabilities.
Part of the process was to complete a 36 km overnight swim in Relay format as per Channel Rules. Unfortunately 1 swimmer was unable to complete and the decision was made to increase their team to a 4, taking off the pressure. So in came our very own Dave Quartermain. Dave has an English Channel Solo Slot for July 2019 so perfect for him to embrace the sea and also has Around Jersey Island swim with myself and another lady in September this year.
Justin started the swim off, slightly nervous and excited at the same time but with a racing pulse he started this 21 mile swim off with focus and determination.
- Next in was Jo and boy oh boy you could hear the determination , she was giving it some umphh in the water. We could hear her breath intake. She soon settled down and gave a really good stint. Jo has been battling several fears whilst in the water, from weeds to jellyfish and has become stronger for it.
Last but not least was Stuart, this little speedsters put every effort into his swim and powered down the Lake as though he had his own engine attached to him. Stuart certainly did not have to worry about getting cold on this swim with the Lake being a toasty 21 degrees.
It had been discussed that the team would swim as a 3 with myself and Dave simply jumping in along side the swimmers completing 1 hour stints with them, so the team were worked hard and had less amount of rest than what they will on the Channel. This was great as Dave and I thrived on the opportunity to get some more training in. I jumped in alongside Jo and DQ jumped in with Stuart and Justin at times.
This swim was a great experience as the team practised with the kit they had, feeds in between and offered fabulous support and encouragement for each other. Team work = Success.
The conditions were amazing although some sunshine would have been nice. A tail wind on the return leg made the swim even better and not taking anything away they smashed all expectations of their finish time. Completing their 21 Mile swim in 12 hours and 4 Minutes. Woooo Hoooooo Indeed!
You will be able to track Team Foxtrot on Uswim Adventure Facebook Group in August. They will be on Connemara piloted by the Amazing Kevin Sherman and expertly supported by Myself and CSA Observer Paula Beshaw.
